For instance, Languages Canada is an association that groups English language programs aiming to protect the interests of international students.
CANADA WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
In 2014, the Canadian government launched an education strategy that aimed to double the number of international students and researchers in Canada in order to expand its workforce and succeed in the world’s economy by 2022. This goal was surpassed in 2017 because Canadian universities, colleges and institutes attract international students and provide them with top-quality English programs, orientation and advising for easier adjustment to life in Canada.
CANADA IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND STUDY
Canada is a wonderful place to study and live, constantly ranked among the top 10 countries in the Quality of Life Index, and the cities of Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto are always in the rankings of the most livable cities in the world. Moreover, the quality of Canadian education is reflected in the high levels of performance, skills and equity in their students results (2015 PISA test).
CANADA IS MULTICULTURAL AND OPEN TO THE WORLD
Canada is officially a bilingual country (English and French), but 200 languages are spoken, and the largest cities are home to many immigrant communities. Canadians tend to be welcoming, open-minded and tolerant. International students feel comfortable in its more informal academic environment, compared with other countries.
CANADA IS BEAUTIFUL
Canada’s overwhelming natural beauty perfectly mixed with clean modern cities form a unique atmosphere to make the most of your study-abroad experience with many sport activities, cultural events, dining venues, provincial parks, hiking trails, ski resorts, and many other places for you to see and enjoy.
CANADA’S BROAD VARIETY OF PROGRAMS

Canada is a very fast-growing country and it is among the most stable economies in the world with one of the highest investments in education per capita in the G8 countries. In fact, Canada will lead the G7 countries in the next 50 years according to the OECD. To address in-demand labour market needs, colleges and institutes work in partnership with Canadian businesses, communities, and industries.
3. Trends in 2025
In 2025, international students are looking for the following English language courses:In 2025, studying English as a second language (ESL) in Canada continues to be a popular choice for international students. The combination of a welcoming and inclusive society, top-quality education, and the opportunity to experience a unique and diverse culture makes Canada an attractive destination for ESL studies.
One of the most exciting trends in 2025 is the strong emphasis on experiential learning in Canadian ESL programs. Canadian ESL schools prioritize real-world experiences, such as community involvement, cultural immersion activities, and field trips, to help students put their language skills into practice and gain confidence. These experiences not only help students learn English more effectively but also provide them with a deeper understanding of Canadian culture and traditions.
Another trend that stands out is the availability of specialized ESL programs catering to different needs and interests. Whether students are interested in business, technology, healthcare, or the arts, Canada offers ESL programs tailored to their specific goals. These programs not only focus on general English language skills but also incorporate vocabulary and communication strategies specific to each field. By studying in specialized programs, international students can build a solid foundation for their future careers.
The use of innovative technology in ESL education is a significant trend in Canada. Interactive tools, language learning apps, and online resources have become an integral part of the learning experience. These technologies allow students to practice their skills outside the classroom and receive immediate feedback, making the learning process more engaging and efficient.
International students in Canada also benefit from the multicultural environment. As one of the most diverse countries globally, Canada offers a unique opportunity to interact with people from various backgrounds and practice English with different accents. This diverse environment helps students build their language skills and prepares them for effective communication in the globalized world.
Furthermore, the post-study work opportunities in Canada make it an even more attractive destination for ESL students. The Canadian government has implemented policies to make it easier for international students to work and stay in the country after completing their studies. These opportunities allow students to further develop their language skills and gain valuable work experience in a multicultural setting.
In conclusion, Canada is an excellent destination for studying English as a second language in 2025. The trends of experiential learning, specialized ESL programs, innovative technology, multicultural environment, and post-study work opportunities make Canada a top choice for international students. By studying and living in Canada, students can not only improve their English skills but also immerse themselves in a rich and diverse cultural experience.
4. Requirements to take an English Course in Canada
Some programs can have their own special requirementsVisa Requirements
If you are planning to study for less than six months and your passport belongs to a visa-exempt country, you will only need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to visit Canada and study, which costs $7 CAD. If on the contrary, you are not from a visa-exempt country, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) online or directly at a Visa Application Centre. You can find the nearest one here:https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/.
On the other hand, when enrolling on a program that lasts for six or more months, you will need to apply for a study permit before travelling to Canada. For this purpose, you need a letter of acceptance from the English language institution, and later, fill in an online or on-site visa request, this last one at a Visa Application Centre. This whole process can take up to three months, so we recommend applying as soon as possible.
For the study permit you will need to submit the following information: a letter of acceptance from the English language school or university, a proof of identity (passport + two recent passport-size photographs, with the name and date of birth written on the back), a proof of financial support, and an optional letter of explanation, which can help your application by giving your reasons to study and showing that you are aware of all your responsibilities.
Age Requirements
Due to the fact that these English programs are planned for adult students, there is a minimum age limit of between 16 and 19 years old usually set by the school or university, with no particular maximum age. For example, in the province of British Columbia, the age of majority is 19 years old, and students under the age of 17 must arrive with one of their parents, a guardian, or have a custodian in Canada, who must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. Those who are minors over the age of 17 might need to fulfill the previous requirement if the visa officer deems it so.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
As we previously mentioned, one of the visa requirements is to provide a proof of sufficient funds, which must cover all expenses, such as your course fees and your personal expenses. The amount of funds you need to prove will depend on which institution you choose and where is located, since different cities have different costs of living. These funds must be on your own personal account or on the account of your sponsor if that is the case.
Minimum English Language Level
Usually, there is no minimum English level requirement for the programs, because there are different levels of English proficiency in which you can study, and your current level will be assed with a placement test the day you arrive. However, there are still courses that require certain English language proficiency levels, which are proved with an IELTS or TOEFL score, which you must have beforehand.
5. Prices, dates and costs of English courses in Canada 2025 - 2026
Explanation about main costsThere is a variation in prices and dates for the English language courses in Canada, depending on which institution you choose, for how long you will study, if it is intensive or part-time, and for how many hours a week you will be studying.

Some of these items are: accommodation, health insurance, use of facilities, extracurricular activities and events, books and materials, etc.

Public transit fare (one-way trip) costs between CAD $2.50 and $3.50. In a big city like Toronto, consider about CAD $123 for monthly commute. Without a doubt, taking English courses in Canada is the best thing you can do because as a foreigner you will feel welcomed by the Canadians, and it will motivate you to speak the English language even when you have a low level. BrazilI decided to go to Canada to study English for several reasons. The quality of the educational system is very good, it is internationally recognized, and because Canada gives you more opportunities than other countries if you want to stay longer. These were the reasons why I went to do English courses in Canada, and all of these are true. However, what I learned there was much better than I imagined. Canada is an incredible country, with lots of nature, parks everywhere, it is a technological country, it has very high standards of living, and the people are the best everywhere. I had the opportunity to visit various cities, and everywhere I felt welcomed. The English courses helped me meet colleagues from Asia, Europe, and Africa. I was able to try many types of food from other cultures, and I think I was able to learn English more efficiently than in any other country, because I always felt motivated and I think Canada had a lot to do with it. If you want to take an English course abroad, believe me that Canada is the best option!
