The Academic English Program offered by the Intensive English Language Institute at the University of North Texas is an excelling full-time program, which has 6 different levels of proficiency, with each session lasting for 8 weeks. It is offered 5 times a year and contrary to its name, the Academic English Program is appropriate not only for those looking to learn English for academic purposes, but also for professionals or people wishing to improve their English for social purposes.

Program features
Students have English classes 23 hours a week (Monday through Friday). Class schedules for the Academic English Program include 20 hours of core classes and 3 hours of supplemental classes.
All students of these English Courses must take a placement test the first day to determine their level within the program. This Intensive English Academic program at UNT has 7 different levels from beginner to advanced levels. The completion of the most advanced level of this program qualifies students for all undergraduate programs and most graduate degree programs at the University of North Texas.
Each session of this English Program is 8 weeks long. Students can take 1, 2, 3 or more sessions. Each session in a different level. Moreover, this ESL (English as a Second Language) Program offers 5 sessions during the year: Fall 1, Fall 2, Spring 1, Spring 2, Summer.
Students can take a TOEFL and GRE preparation class. These courses have an extra cost and are only available to students enrolled at the Intensive English Language Institute. The courses are offered every year, but not during every term.
Students must arrive before the first day of orientation week, which last 2 days. During these days, the student must take the placement test, register on the program, receive the UNT student ID card, pay for tuition, attend a seminar about academic policies, cultural adjustment, health and safety information, meet the English instructors, and other students. During this week, the Intensive English Language Institute also plans many fun and informative activities, such as shopping trips, UNT campus tour, welcome party, and social events.

For example if you want to study for approximately 6 months, you can take the Fall I, Fall II and Spring I sessions. You will not repeat the same course, because each session will be in a different level.
What is included in the "Program Fee" of the English course, and other costs to consider
Within the tuition fees, there are several things already included, but also a few extra items you must consider.
The following fees are included in the "Program Fee"
- Tuition Fee (classes, academic advising, cultural and social activities, orientation, placement testing, and books).
- UNT Fees (Student ID, Technology Fee, libraries, recreation center, student union, and campus activities and events).
- Health insurance (mandatory)
Other costs to consider
- Application fee: a USD$75 non-refundable fee paid upon your application, which covers the delivery to your home country of the Form I-20 via certified post mail, which is needed to apply for the student visa.
- Visa costs: international students who enroll on a full-time program in the USA need the F-1 student visa. Costs related to the F-1 visa include the SEVIS I-901 Fee (US$350 aprox.) to register on the Student Exchange Visitor Information System and a Visa fee (US$160 aprox.). These are costs set by the U.S. government.

Clear Copy of the identification page of your passport. The passport must be valid for 6 months after the first day of classes.
3. Financial Verification
Bank letter or bank statement that shows that you or your sponsor have at least the "Estimated Total Expense" of the program. Amounts can be in US dollars or your local currency.
The estimated total expense is an estimate made by the university that includes tuition fees, and an estimate of what you might spend in medical insurance, housing, meals, books and supplies for one academic year. Flight tickets are not included in this estimation.
*UNT requires you to show financial verification for one academic year, even if you plan to take only one intensive English program session.
Bank document must show at least the following amount:
- Starting on Fall I, Fall II or Spring I (9 months): USD$$27,711 (plus $4,144 per dependent)
- Starting on Spring II or Summer (12 months) : USD$$35,803 (plus $5,600 per dependent)
4. Application Fee
Non-refundable application fee of $75 dollars paid to the The Intensive English Language Institute. After receiving confirmation from one of our representatives, you must pay the application fee online, following the instructions mentioned by the representative.

2. Acceptance Process
After we have received all your application documents and you have paid the application fee, you will be contacted by the admission office within 2 weeks.
If you are applying for a full-time program, you will need an F-1 student visa. After you have been accepted in the program, the admission office will send you the acceptance documents plus the form I-20, needed to apply for the F-1 student visa.
3. Visa Processing
Please check with us what type of visa you need, depending on the program you are interested in at UNT.
- If the program you are applying for is a full-time program (18hrs/week or more), you will need the F-1 student visa. With an F-1 visa you can extend your stay in the United States as long as you continue studying.
- If your program is less than 18 hours a week, you will have to travel to the U.S. as a tourist with a B1/B2 tourist visa or visa waiver ESTA. As a tourist, you can only stay in the U.S. the time period your tourist visa allows, since your main purpose in the U.S. should be tourism.

Generally, for a F-1 student visa, students must do the following:
- Complete the DS-160 form
- Schedule an appointment at the U.S. embassy
- Pay for the F-1 student visa (approx. US$160)

- Go to the embassy on the scheduled day

4. Payment
Next, you need to make full payment of all remaining fees, which is due by registration week, and can be done by credit card, eCheck, check, cash or money transfer. You will receive more information regarding dates once you begin the application process.
5. Arrival at School
You should arrive at least a week before the program start date to attend the orientation. On your admission letter you can find more information about the orientation and the initial placement test. On the first day at school you should bring your passport, F-1 student visa, 2 pencils and tuition payment.
Important: We suggest that you apply at least 2 months in advance.
